Citicoline Capsules - 500 mg CDP-Choline High Dose | 60 Capsules

Citicoline (CDP-choline) - the body's own compound of cytidine and choline

  • Citicoline, chemically cytidine 5'-diphosphocholine (CDP-choline for short), is a nucleotide that occurs naturally in the cells of the human body. It consists of the building blocks cytidine and choline, linked by a diphosphate bridge (molecular formula C14H26N4O11P2).
  • In metabolism, citicoline is an intermediate of the so-called Kennedy pathway - the synthesis route cells use to form phosphatidylcholine, a main component of cell membranes. It is named after the biochemist Eugene P. Kennedy, who described CDP-choline in the 1950s.
  • After intake, citicoline is split into choline and cytidine; in humans, blood levels of choline and above all uridine rise, as a pharmacokinetic study showed (Wurtman et al., 2000).

500 mg citicoline with ≥ 98% purity - study-based dosage

  • Green Naturals Citicoline contains 500 mg CDP-choline in a single capsule per day - compared with many multi-ingredient products in which citicoline is only a minor component without a clearly stated daily amount.
  • The citicoline raw material is specified by HPLC to a content of at least 98% and is additionally tested for heavy metals and microbiology - compared with many suppliers who give no information on the purity of their raw material.
  • 500 mg citicoline per day was investigated in a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled 12-week study with 100 healthy older adults (Nakazaki et al., 2021); the review by Grieb (2014) gives an overview of mechanisms and open research questions.

Transparency instead of advertising promises - authorised as a novel food

  • There are currently no authorised health claims for citicoline according to EFSA - which is why we deliberately avoid promises of effects and give you verifiable facts instead.
  • Citicoline has been authorised in the EU as a novel food since 2014 - for food supplements with up to 500 mg per day, not for children. Green Naturals Citicoline provides exactly this amount with 1 capsule.
  • 60 vegan capsules per tin last for 60 days - a 2-month supply with 1 capsule daily.

  • Best time to take

Take 1 capsule daily with sufficient liquid, for example in the morning with breakfast. Regular daily intake is more important than the time of day.

  • Dosage and duration of use

Daily dose: 1 capsule (= 500 mg citicoline). In studies, citicoline was taken daily for 12 weeks. The pack with 60 capsules lasts for 60 days. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose. What is citicoline?

Citicoline is a compound naturally present in the body, made of the building blocks cytidine and choline - chemically cytidine 5'-diphosphocholine. The body uses it as an intermediate in the formation of phosphatidylcholine, a main component of cell membranes. In food supplements, citicoline is used as a high-purity raw material - at Green Naturals with a purity of at least 98%.

What is CDP-choline?

CDP-choline is short for cytidine diphosphate choline and a synonym for citicoline - it is the same compound. The spellings citicholine or citicolin are also common. Branded ingredients such as Cognizin® are also citicoline; what matters for quality is the content, purity and laboratory testing of the raw material.

What is citicoline good for?

Citicoline provides the body with the building blocks choline and cytidine, which it uses to form phosphatidylcholine. In research, citicoline is mainly investigated in connection with brain metabolism, for example in a placebo-controlled study with 500 mg per day (Nakazaki et al., 2021). There are currently no authorised health claims for citicoline according to EFSA.

What is the difference between citicoline and choline?

Choline is a single nutrient, whereas citicoline is a compound of choline and cytidine. After intake, citicoline is split into these two building blocks; in humans, blood levels of choline and above all uridine rise (Wurtman et al., 2000). Citicoline is therefore not simply a choline source, but a distinct substance with two building blocks.

Does citicoline have side effects?

In 2013, EFSA assessed citicoline as safe for the proposed uses and use levels; on this basis it is authorised in the EU for food supplements with up to 500 mg per day. Occasional mild, transient complaints were reported in studies. Stick to the recommended daily dose of 1 capsule and talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure or take medication.

Can you take citicoline during pregnancy?

Pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult a doctor or pharmacist before taking citicoline. Only limited data are available for these life stages. Your doctor can assess whether supplementation makes sense in your situation and will also take your dietary choline intake into account.

Is citicoline suitable for children?

No. Green Naturals Citicoline is not intended for consumption by children. This restriction is part of the EU authorisation of citicoline as a novel food and is therefore stated on the label. Keep the tin out of reach of young children, ideally in a cool, dry place protected from light.

What is the dosage of the citicoline capsules?

The daily dose is 1 capsule with 500 mg citicoline (CDP-choline). This amount corresponds to the maximum for which citicoline is authorised in food supplements in the EU and has also been used in human studies. One tin with 60 capsules lasts for 60 days. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose.

When should you take citicoline?

Take 1 capsule daily with sufficient liquid - many users choose the morning, for example with breakfast. A fixed time makes regular intake easier. Whether you take the capsule with a meal or on an empty stomach is up to your own tolerance. In studies, citicoline was taken daily over a period of 12 weeks.

Can the capsules be opened?

Yes. The vegan HPMC capsule can be carefully pulled apart; the contents can then be stirred into water, juice or yoghurt. Consume the mixture immediately after preparing it. The easiest way, however, is to swallow the whole capsule with sufficient liquid - this keeps the 500 mg dose exact.

Is the product completely natural?

Citicoline is a compound that occurs naturally in the human body. For food supplements, the raw material is produced in high purity and tested by HPLC for at least 98% citicoline. The capsule shell is made of plant cellulose (HPMC) - the product is vegan and is manufactured and lab-tested in Austria.

Is citicoline authorised in the EU?

Yes. Citicoline has been authorised throughout the EU as a novel food since 2014 (Implementing Decision 2014/423/EU). The authorisation permits up to 500 mg per day in food supplements for adults. Green Naturals Citicoline complies with these requirements and states "Not intended for consumption by children" on the label.

Is citicoline available in pharmacies?

In Germany, Green Naturals® Citicoline with 60 capsules can be ordered from pharmacies under the German pharmacy number PZN 20996510. Outside Germany, it is available from online pharmacies and directly in the Green Naturals online shop. When comparing products, check the amount of citicoline per daily dose and whether the purity of the raw material is stated.
