Collagen from eggshell membrane - the protein network beneath the shell

  • The eggshell membrane (ESM) is the thin, fibrous membrane of the hen's egg (Gallus gallus domesticus) between the calcified shell and the egg white. It consists of more than 90% protein and forms a dense network of structural proteins that gives the egg strength and elasticity (Nakano et al., 2003).
  • Its hallmark is the natural combination of fibrous collagen types I, V and X, elastin and glycosaminoglycans such as hyaluronic acid and glucosamine (Cánovas et al., 2022) - a complex that would otherwise have to be assembled from several individual ingredients.
  • Unlike conventional collagen from cattle, pigs or fish, eggshell membrane comes from a by-product of egg processing - a vegetarian collagen source that would otherwise go unused.

Ovomet® - a branded ingredient with declared contents

  • Green Naturals Collagen Capsules contain 300 mg of the branded ingredient Ovomet® from the Spanish company EGGNOVO S.L. per daily dose - compared to many manufacturers that use eggshell membrane without defined active contents.

What is collagen?

Collagen is the most abundant structural protein in the human body and an essential component of connective tissue, skin, bone, tendons and cartilage. There are around 28 different types of collagen, with type I being the most widespread. As a food supplement, collagen is usually obtained from cattle, pigs or fish - in these capsules it comes from eggshell membrane and is therefore vegetarian.

What is collagen good for?

In the body, collagen is a key building block of connective tissue and gives skin, bone and cartilage structure and tensile strength. There are currently no authorised health claims under EFSA for collagen as a food supplement, which is why we make no promises about its effects. However, eggshell membrane is being investigated in randomised, placebo-controlled studies; a systematic review evaluated 7 such studies (García-Muñoz et al., 2024).

What is eggshell membrane collagen?

The eggshell membrane is the thin membrane between the calcified shell and the egg white of the hen's egg. It consists of more than 90% protein, including collagen types I, V and X as well as elastin, and naturally contains glycosaminoglycans such as hyaluronic acid and glucosamine. Unlike isolated collagen peptides, it provides these structural proteins in a natural complex - with just 1 capsule a day.

Is there vegan collagen?

Genuine collagen is only found in animal tissue; vegan products usually contain amino acids or plant-based cofactors instead of collagen. Collagen from eggshell membrane is a vegetarian alternative: it does not come from slaughter by-products like bovine, porcine or fish collagen, but from egg processing. The product is therefore vegetarian, but not vegan, and contains egg.

Which collagen types does it contain?

Eggshell membrane contains fibrous collagen types I, V and X (Cánovas et al., 2022). Type I is the most abundant collagen in the human body, while type V occurs together with type I in connective tissue. Each capsule contains 66 mg of collagen in a natural complex with 75 mg elastin, 9 mg hyaluronic acid and 6 mg glucosamine.

What is Ovomet®?

Ovomet® is a branded eggshell membrane powder from the Spanish company EGGNOVO S.L. It is obtained from the inner membrane of hens' eggs and provides collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid in declared amounts. Ovomet® itself has been used in preclinical research, among other studies (Yu et al., 2024). Ovomet® is a registered trademark of EGGNOVO S.L.

How much collagen per day?

There is no generally established daily amount for collagen, and no nutrient reference value exists. Collagen powder from cattle or fish is often dosed in grams, whereas eggshell membrane is dosed in milligrams because it provides several structural proteins at once. 1 capsule contains 300 mg eggshell membrane with 66 mg collagen - this corresponds to the lower dose of a placebo-controlled study (Cánovas et al., 2022).

Should you take collagen in the morning or evening?

The timing is flexible - what matters is regular daily intake. Take 1 capsule with sufficient liquid, ideally at the same time every day, for example in the morning with breakfast. This way, taking it quickly becomes a routine and is easy to combine with other food supplements.

How long should you take collagen?

We recommend continuous use for at least 8 weeks - this is also how long the studies with 300 mg eggshell membrane per day ran (Cánovas et al., 2022). One jar of 60 capsules lasts for 60 days and covers this period. Longer-term use at the recommended daily dose is possible; the daily dose should not be exceeded.

Does eggshell membrane have side effects?

At the recommended daily dose, eggshell membrane is considered well tolerated. It is a natural component of the hen's egg and is used here as a pure powder without any other additives. People with an egg allergy should not take the product, as it contains egg as an allergen. Please do not exceed the recommended daily dose of 1 capsule.

Can the capsules be opened?

Yes. The plant-based HPMC capsule is easy to open, and the contents can be stirred into yoghurt, muesli or a drink, for example. This is practical if you don't like swallowing capsules. The easiest way, however, is to take the whole capsule with sufficient liquid.

Is the product completely natural?

Yes. The formula is deliberately minimal: eggshell membrane powder as the only ingredient and a plant-based capsule shell made of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose. It contains no fillers, colours, preservatives or flavourings. Collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid are naturally present in the membrane and are not added separately.

Is the product suitable during pregnancy?

The product is intended for adults only. Pregnant women, breastfeeding women and children should consult a doctor or pharmacist before use. Please keep the jar out of reach of young children and store it in a cool, dry place away from light.
