Saw palmetto, pumpkin seed & nettle - three classic plants for men

  • Saw palmetto (Serenoa repens) is a low-growing fan palm of the palm family (Arecaceae), native to the south-eastern USA. Its dark, oil-rich berries are used - their key constituents are phytosterols such as beta-sitosterol and free fatty acids.
  • The field pumpkin (Cucurbita pepo) belongs to the gourd family (Cucurbitaceae) and originally comes from Central America. Besides phytosterols, its seeds provide proteins, amino acids and lignans; the European Pharmacopoeia standard refers to the variety styriaca (Styrian oil pumpkin).
  • The trio is completed by nettle leaf (Urtica dioica, contains 1% silicon dioxide) and tomato fruit extract (Lycopersicon esculentum) with 10% lycopene - a red carotenoid that gives tomatoes their colour.

Saw palmetto is traditionally used in products for men; its constituents and extraction methods are being studied scientifically (De Monte et al., 2014). There are currently no authorised health claims for saw palmetto itself according to EFSA. The provable statements in Prostanorm come from zinc and selenium: zinc contributes to the maintenance of normal testosterone levels in the blood, selenium to normal spermatogenesis.

What does Prostanorm contain?

A daily dose of 3 capsules provides 600 mg pumpkin seed extract 4:1, 300 mg saw palmetto fruit extract 5:1 (of which 15 mg phytosterols), 150 mg tomato extract (of which 15 mg lycopene) and 130 mg nettle leaf extract. It also contains 5 mg zinc (50% NRV), 50 µg selenium (91% NRV) and 3.9 mg vitamin E (33% NRV). The capsule shell is made of plant-based hydroxypropyl methylcellulose.

Why combine saw palmetto and pumpkin seed?

Saw palmetto and pumpkin seed are the two best-known plants in complexes for men and are often combined. Both provide phytosterols, and pumpkin seed extract additionally supplies proteins, amino acids and lignans (Grasu et al., 2025). In Prostanorm both are declared with a clear extraction ratio and are complemented by nettle, lycopene, zinc, selenium and vitamin E.

What is lycopene?

Lycopene is a red carotenoid found mainly in tomatoes, where it gives the fruit its colour. It is fat-soluble and belongs to the secondary plant compounds. Prostanorm contains 150 mg tomato fruit extract (Lycopersicon esculentum), standardised to 10% lycopene - which corresponds to 15 mg lycopene per daily dose.

How much saw palmetto is in Prostanorm?

The recommended daily dose of Prostanorm is 3 capsules. They provide 300 mg saw palmetto fruit extract at a ratio of 5:1, standardised to 5% phytosterols - i.e. 15 mg phytosterols per day. The extract is complemented by 600 mg pumpkin seed extract 4:1 and the other ingredients of the complex. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose.

When should I take Prostanorm?

You can choose the time of day freely - what matters is regular daily intake. We recommend taking the 3 capsules with a meal and sufficient water, as phytosterols and lycopene are fat-soluble. You can also spread the capsules over breakfast, lunch and dinner if you find that easier.

Does Prostanorm have side effects?

Prostanorm is generally considered well tolerated at the recommended dose; mild gastrointestinal complaints are occasionally reported for saw palmetto extract. Keep to the recommended daily dose of 3 capsules and do not take any other food supplements containing zinc or selenium. If you take medication or are unsure, please consult your doctor or pharmacist before use.

Can the capsules be opened?

Technically, the plant-based HPMC capsule can be opened. However, we recommend swallowing the capsules whole with sufficient water, as stated on the pack - this keeps the extracts protected until intake and the taste of the plant extracts goes unnoticed. If you have difficulty swallowing, you can spread the daily dose over three meals.

Is the product completely natural?

The four plant extracts come from pumpkin seeds, saw palmetto fruit, tomatoes and nettle leaves; the capsule shell is plant-based. Zinc, selenium and vitamin E are included in proven compounds (zinc gluconate, sodium selenite, DL-alpha-tocopheryl acetate), which are not entirely natural. We do without colourings, and the capsules are vegan, lactose-free and gluten-free.

Is the product vegan?

Yes. Green Naturals Prostanorm contains only plant extracts, minerals and vitamin E as well as a capsule shell made of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) instead of gelatine. It contains no animal ingredients. In addition, the capsules are lactose-free and gluten-free and contain no colourings - made and lab-tested in Germany.

Who should not take Prostanorm?

Prostanorm is intended for adults only. The product is not suitable for pregnant women, children or adolescents. As each daily dose already contains 5 mg zinc and 50 µg selenium, you should not take any other food supplements containing zinc or selenium. How long does one pack last?

One pack contains 90 capsules. At the recommended intake of 3 capsules daily, it lasts 30 days - exactly one month.
