Lungwort Capsules - 300 mg Extract 10:1 | 60 Capsules

Lungwort (Pulmonaria officinalis) - the spotted spring plant

  • Lungwort (Pulmonaria officinalis L.) is a perennial plant of the borage family (Boraginaceae), native to Central and Eastern Europe. It is recognisable by its white-spotted leaves and its flowers, which change colour from pink to blue-violet in spring.
  • The herb mainly contains phenolic acids - above all rosmarinic acid and other caffeic acid compounds such as lithospermic and salvianolic acids - as well as flavonoids, mucilage, tannins and silicic acid. LC-MS/MS analyses of the aerial parts identified 45 phenolic compounds (Krzyżanowska-Kowalczyk et al., 2018).
  • The name comes from the medieval doctrine of signatures: the spotted leaves were thought to resemble lung tissue (Latin pulmo = lung). Hildegard of Bingen already described the plant as "Lungwurz" in her Physica around 1150.

Lungwort extract 10:1 - concentrated instead of simply ground

  • Green Naturals lungwort capsules contain a 10:1 extract with 300 mg per daily dose - mathematically obtained from 3,000 mg of dried herb. By comparison, many manufacturers only use ground lungwort powder without stating an extract ratio.
  • Plant species and plant part are clearly declared: Pulmonaria officinalis, aerial parts - compared to many suppliers who only state "lungwort" without the botanical species. This matters because the lichen tree lungwort (Lobaria pulmonaria) is also colloquially called lungwort.
  • The phenolic acid fraction of Pulmonaria officinalis has been investigated in vitro in human blood plasma (Krzyżanowska-Kowalczyk et al., 2021); a recent review summarises the known plant compounds of the genus Pulmonaria (Chauhan et al., 2022).

Lungwort capsules - clearly dosed, vegan, lab-tested

  • One capsule a day provides 300 mg of lungwort extract - always the same amount, without weighing or brewing tea. There are currently no authorised health claims under EFSA for lungwort - which is why we deliberately make no claims about effects.
  • The formula consists of just three ingredients: lungwort extract, rice flour as a natural carrier and a plant-based HPMC capsule shell - vegan, gelatine-free and without artificial additives.
  • 60 vegan capsules per tub last 60 days - a 2-month supply, manufactured and lab-tested in Austria.

What is lungwort?

Lungwort (Pulmonaria officinalis L.) is a perennial, early-flowering plant of the borage family (Boraginaceae) that grows in deciduous forests of Central and Eastern Europe. Its white-spotted leaves and flowers that change from pink to blue-violet are characteristic. In food supplements, lungwort is used as an extract from the aerial parts - at Green Naturals as a concentrated 10:1 extract.

Is lungwort poisonous?

Lungwort (Pulmonaria officinalis) is not considered a poisonous plant and has been used for centuries as a tea and herbal preparation. Using the correct plant species is important - which is why we clearly declare species and plant part and have every batch tested in the laboratory. Stick to the recommended daily dose of 1 capsule; pregnant and breastfeeding women and children should seek medical advice before use.

What is lungwort good for?

Lungwort is valued mainly for its natural plant compound profile: it contains phenolic acids such as rosmarinic acid, flavonoids, mucilage and silicic acid. These compounds are being investigated in research (Chauhan et al., 2022). There are currently no authorised health claims under EFSA for lungwort - which is why we deliberately make no claims about effects.

What does lungwort do?

The compounds of Pulmonaria officinalis - especially rosmarinic acid and other caffeic acid compounds - have been investigated in laboratory studies, including in vitro in human blood plasma (Krzyżanowska-Kowalczyk et al., 2021). Human studies with lungwort extract are still scarce. There are no authorised EFSA health claims for lungwort, so we make no statements about effects in the body.

What does lungwort look like?

Lungwort grows about 15 to 30 cm tall and has rough, hairy, ovate leaves with typical white spots. The funnel-shaped flowers appear from March to May and change from pink to blue-violet due to a shift in the pH of the cell sap - which is why the plant has folk names such as "soldiers and sailors".

Lungwort capsules: how long to take them?

Green Naturals lungwort capsules are designed for regular daily intake of 1 capsule; there is no fixed duration of use. A tub of 60 capsules lasts 60 days, i.e. 2 months. If you want to take lungwort long-term or are taking medication, it is best to discuss this with your doctor or pharmacist.

What does extract 10:1 mean?

The extract ratio 10:1 means that 1 part extract is obtained from 10 parts of dried lungwort. 300 mg of extract per capsule therefore corresponds mathematically to 3,000 mg of herb. Unlike simply ground powder, the plant compounds are concentrated in the extract - so a sensible amount fits into just one capsule a day.

What is the dosage of the lungwort capsules?

The daily dose is 1 capsule with 300 mg lungwort extract 10:1 (Pulmonaria officinalis, aerial parts). Take the capsule with sufficient liquid, ideally at the same time every day. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose.

What is the difference between lungwort capsules and lungwort tea?

With lungwort tea, the amount of plant compounds you take in depends on the amount of herb, steeping time and water temperature, and varies from cup to cup. Lungwort capsules, on the other hand, provide exactly 300 mg of extract 10:1 every day - tasteless, precisely dosed and easy to take on the go. Both forms can be combined if desired.

Can the capsules be opened?

Yes. The vegan HPMC capsule can be carefully pulled apart; the contents can be stirred into water, juice or yoghurt, for example. Note that the extract has a slightly herbal taste of its own. The easiest way is to swallow the whole capsule with a glass of water.

Is the product completely natural?

Yes. The capsules contain only lungwort extract from the aerial parts of Pulmonaria officinalis, rice flour as a natural carrier and a plant-based capsule shell made of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose. No artificial colours, flavours or preservatives are used, and the product is vegan.

Is the product suitable for pregnant women?

Pregnant and breastfeeding women and children should consult a doctor or pharmacist before use. The product is intended for adults only. As a general rule, food supplements are not a substitute for a varied and balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.

Are the lungwort capsules available in pharmacies?

In Germany, Green Naturals® Lungwort can be ordered in pharmacies under the German pharmacy number PZN 20996504. Outside Germany, you can order the capsules from online pharmacies and directly in the Green Naturals online shop. Simply quote the PZN at a German pharmacy to receive exactly this product with 60 capsules.
