Milk thistle - the thistle with the marbled leaves
- Milk thistle (Silybum marianum (L.) Gaertn.) is a member of the daisy family (Asteraceae) from the Mediterranean, recognisable by its white-marbled leaves and purple flower head. The ripe seeds are used, botanically the fruits.
- Its characteristic constituent is silymarin, a complex of flavonolignans - above all silibinin A and B, silychristin and silydianin - alongside the flavonoid taxifolin.
- Dioscorides and Pliny already described the plant in antiquity; today milk thistle is one of the best documented species in European herbal medicine and the subject of its own EU monograph by the HMPC.
The complex: 200 mg silymarin plus artichoke and dandelion
- One capsule provides 250 mg milk thistle seed extract with 200 mg silymarin - equivalent to a standardisation of 80 % and clearly declared on the label.
- The extract is complemented by 100 mg artichoke leaf extract with 5 mg cynarin (Cynara cardunculus var. scolymus) and 100 mg dandelion root extract with 5 mg flavonoids (Taraxacum officinale) - three traditional bitter plants in one formula.
- Silymarin is poorly water-soluble; its bioavailability and the formulation approaches to it are the subject of pharmaceutical research (Di Costanzo & Angelico, 2019), while artichoke leaf extract and its cynarin content are pharmacologically described (Ben Salem et al., 2015).
82.5 mg choline and 90 days from one tub
- Alongside the three plant extracts, every capsule contains 82.5 mg choline: choline contributes to the maintenance of normal liver function.
- Choline is an essential nutrient that the body produces only to a limited extent. In the diet it occurs mainly in eggs, meat, fish and pulses - in this formula it comes from choline bitartrate.
- 90 vegan capsules last 90 days at 1 capsule daily - a three-month supply, produced and lab-tested in Austria.
-
When should you take milk thistle?
Take 1 capsule daily with sufficient liquid during a meal. Bitter plants such as milk thistle, artichoke and dandelion are traditionally taken with food, and many people choose the largest meal of the day for this. The exact time can be freely adapted to your routine - regular daily intake is what matters.

Dosage and duration of use
Daily dose: 1 capsule (= 250 mg milk thistle seed extract with 200 mg silymarin, 100 mg artichoke leaf extract with 5 mg cynarin, 100 mg dandelion root extract with 5 mg flavonoids and 82.5 mg choline). Do not exceed the recommended daily dose. One tub of 90 capsules lasts 90 days. For adults only. Pregnant women, breastfeeding women and children should consult a doctor or pharmacist before use. Milk thistle, artichoke and dandelion belong to the daisy family: in case of a known allergy to Asteraceae, the product should not be taken.

Remarks
- HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) is a preventive system for ensuring food safety that identifies and assesses potential hazards in production and minimizes them through targeted control measures. The seal refers to the manufacturing process.
- This is how the grade is calculated: Grade calculation based on star ratings: 5.00 - 4.50 Very good, 4.49 - 3.50 Good, 3.49 - 2.50 Satisfactory, 2.49 - 1.50 Sufficient, 1.49 - 1.00 Poor. For the verification of ratings, no authenticity check of customer reviews is carried out. The ratings are combined from different sources, such as mail-order pharmacies and online marketplaces.
