Saffron Capsules with Affron® - 30 mg Extract | 150 Capsules

Saffron (Crocus sativus) - red gold

  • Saffron (Crocus sativus L.) is a plant from the iris family (Iridaceae). Only the dried stigmas of the flower are used - up to 150,000 flowers are harvested by hand for 1 kg of saffron.
  • Its characteristic constituents are the carotenoids crocin and crocetin as well as the aroma compounds safranal and picrocrocin - combined in the Affron® extract as Lepticrosalides®.
  • Saffron was already traded as the world's most precious spice in the ancient Mediterranean and the Near East - today the labour-intensive hand harvest makes it more expensive than some precious metals.

Affron® - a standardised branded extract instead of anonymous powder

  • Green Naturals Saffron Capsules contain the patented branded extract Affron® at 30 mg per daily dose - compared to many manufacturers that use unstandardised saffron powder without defined active contents.
  • Every batch is standardised to 3.5% Lepticrosalides® (1.05 mg per daily dose) - compared to many suppliers that do not declare any bioactive lead compounds.
  • Affron® is the best-documented saffron extract: in one of the most recently published randomised, placebo-controlled 12-week studies of 86 women aged 50 to 70, the extract was investigated at 28 mg per day (Lopresti & Smith, 2026) - and the bioaccessibility of its lead compounds has been confirmed pharmacokinetically (Almodóvar et al., 2020).

Plus vitamins B1 & B3 - with substantiated benefits

  • Vitamin B1 (thiamine) and niacin (vitamin B3) contribute to normal psychological function, normal functioning of the nervous system and normal energy-yielding metabolism - niacin additionally contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue (authorised EFSA claims).
  • Both vitamins are dosed at exactly 100% of the Nutrient Reference Value (NRV): 1.1 mg vitamin B1 and 16 mg niacin (NE) per daily dose - sensibly supplemented instead of overdosed.
  • 150 vegan capsules per bottle last for 75 days - a convenient 2.5-month supply at 2 capsules daily.

What is saffron?

Saffron is a spice made from the dried stigmas of the saffron crocus (Crocus sativus L.), a plant from the iris family. Up to 150,000 flowers are harvested by hand for 1 kg. In food supplements, saffron is used as a standardised extract such as Affron®.

Why is saffron so expensive?

Each flower carries only three stigmas, which are picked by hand. The enormous harvesting effort makes saffron the most expensive spice in the world - and explains why adulteration is common. A standardised, lab-tested extract protects against precisely this risk.

Where does saffron come from?

Originally from the eastern Mediterranean and Western Asia; today Iran, Spain, Greece and Morocco are the most important growing countries. The raw material for Affron® comes from controlled cultivation outside the EU and is extracted and standardised in Spain by Pharmactive.

Which plant is saffron obtained from?

From the saffron crocus (Crocus sativus L.). Only the red stigmas of the flower are used - not to be confused with "false saffron" (safflower).

What does saffron do in the body?

Saffron contains the carotenoids crocin and crocetin as well as safranal, whose mechanisms are being investigated in research (Cerdá-Bernad et al., 2022). The extract used here, Affron®, has been investigated in randomised, placebo-controlled studies at 28 mg per day (Lopresti & Smith, 2026). No authorised EFSA claims currently exist for saffron itself - the vitamins B1 and B3 it is combined with contribute to normal psychological function and normal functioning of the nervous system.

Is saffron healthy?

As a spice in usual amounts, saffron is considered safe. In this product it provides standardised plant compounds (1.05 mg Lepticrosalides® per daily dose); the authorised health claims come from vitamin B1 and niacin - including the reduction of tiredness and fatigue (niacin).

What is saffron extract (Affron®)?

Affron® is a patented, standardised saffron extract from the stigmas of Crocus sativus L., standardised to 3.5% Lepticrosalides® and investigated pharmacokinetically. It is produced by Pharmactive Biotech Products, S.L.U. under strict quality controls.

What is the dosage of the saffron capsules?

2 capsules daily = 30 mg Affron® saffron extract (of which 1.05 mg Lepticrosalides®), 16 mg niacin (100% NRV) and 1.1 mg vitamin B1 (100% NRV).

Can the capsules be opened?

Yes. The vegan HPMC capsule can be opened; the contents can be stirred into water or yoghurt, for example. However, the easiest way is to take the capsule whole with sufficient liquid.

Is the product completely natural?

Yes. The capsules contain only saffron extract from genuine Crocus sativus stigmas, vitamins B1 and B3, rice flour as a natural carrier and a plant-based HPMC capsule shell - no artificial colours, preservatives or flavourings, vegan, gluten-free and lactose-free.

Is the product suitable for pregnant women?

No. Do not take during pregnancy. If you are taking antidepressants, please consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Are the saffron capsules available in pharmacies?

Yes. In Germany, Green Naturals® Saffron + Vitamin B1 & B3 is available in pharmacies under PZN 20790688; it is also available from online pharmacies and our online shop.
